About

A team serving industry, united by a shared passion for granular materials. The industrial start-up PowderCraft is the result of a collaboration between academia and industry, bringing science to bear on powder-related problems. Discover our journey—let the introductions begin!

The Science of Granular Media

Sébastien Kiesgen de Richter began his research career at LEMTA (Laboratory of Energy and Theoretical and Applied Mechanics) in 2010. His experiments focus on granular matter and he specializes in flow in confined spaces. He has developed his academic career and published more than 60 articles.

An encounter at a trade show made a particular impression on him, when an industrialist told him, “Your science seems fascinating, but I just need to know why my powder isn’t flowing!” His desire to make an impact in the industrial world by helping to solve real-world problems grew stronger.

He was also awarded the Innovation Chair at the IUF (Institut Universitaire de France) in 2021 and is attempting to demonstrate the practical usefulness of scientific advances for the industrial world.

A new approach for granular materials

In 2022, Adrien Gans joined LEMTA and Sébastien Kiesgen de Richter’s team. His research focused on creating a granular material whose properties he could control. His early years of research enabled him to expand the number and quantity of granular materials he designed. For each new bulk material he creates, he applies granulometry, hygrometry, cohesion, and many other properties of his choosing.

Thanks to these carefully developed materials, he is able to reproduce the behavior of all the powders he studies. He has thus created a database that now allows him to anticipate the behavior of the new powders he observes. This data is useful in his research, but its real value lies in its use in solving major industrial challenges.

Applying solutions to the industrial world

Mélanie Gans completes the PowderCraft team. Her industrial career began when she specialized in Industrial Engineering at INSA Lyon. Her appetite for logic and continuous improvement led her to gain a detailed understanding of the industrial environments in which she works.

Her decisions and advice focus on two key areas of business health. Employee well-being is at the heart of her concerns: employee health, workplace ergonomics, and the automation of difficult tasks are key issues for retaining talent. Her vision is also based on the economic profitability of the company: avoiding material loss, making use of unused products, and reducing storage and production time remain pillars of the company’s economic well-being.

The PowderCraft vision: each granular material problem has its solution

Dust, grains, powder, bulk… Whatever you call it, powder is an integral part of today’s industrial system. 80% of the objects around us come from powder, are in powder form, or will become powder during their life cycle. Bulk material is the second most widely used material in the world after water. Controlling its presence is therefore not only recommended, but above all necessary.

Our ambition: to help manufacturers better understand their powder in order to better control it. To do this, we rely on measurement methods developed in-house by our two researchers. These innovative methods provide data that was previously inaccessible. We now describe powder by its intrinsic properties and offer powder characterization in international system units.

These major advances will enable you to use your powder more efficiently. With the support of our scientific and technical experts, you will have access to innovative solutions designed for your company and your powder.
PowderCraft is the accessible scientific solution to your industrial powder problems.

Our values

PowderCraft is committed to a process of profound improvement and disruption in the approach to granular materials.

Bulk materials can be harmful to employees, regardless of their industry. The effects of inhaling these materials often have lifelong consequences and can sometimes significantly reduce life expectancy. We want to improve working conditions for everyone who handles and breathes in these products every day.

We are also committed to reducing the impact of powders on the environment. We want to help companies better capture their dust and other airborne granular materials to prevent them from spreading into the atmosphere.

We are helping our vision of a more diverse industry become a reality by partnering with associations that promote gender diversity in industry and science.
